Pengertian Sejarah

Secara Etimologis

Sejarah berasal dari bahasa Arab yakni syajara yang berarti terjadi, syajarah yang berarti pohon dan syajarah an-nasab yang berarti pohon silsilah (Kuntowijoyo, 2013:1). Definisi pohon ini merujuk pada skema silsilah keluarga raja (dinasti) pada masa lalu. Kata syajaratun kemudian diserap ke dalam bahasa Melayu menjadi syajarah.

Adapun dalam Bahasa Indonesia disebut dengan sejarah. Sedangkan dalam bahasa Inggris, sejarah disebut dengan history yang diserap dari bahasa Yunani yakni historia, yang memiliki makna penyelidikan, pengumpulan, pengorganisasian, dan penyajian informasi mengenai peristiwa masa lampau dengan manusia sebagai tokoh utamanya (Rachmawati, 2016: 1).

Secara Terminologis

Menurut bapak sejarah Herodotus, sejarah bukan berkembang dan bergerak lurus ke depan dengan tujuan pasti, melainkan melingkar, disebabkan oleh keadaan manusia itu sendiri. Sementara itu, Ibnu Khaldun mendefinisikan sejarah sebagai catatan tentang manusia dan peradabannya.

Sedangkan menurut Sartono Kartodirdjo, sejarah pada hakikatnya dibatasi oleh dua hal, yaitu sejarah dalam arti objektif dan sejarah dalam aarti subjektif. Sejarah objektif menunjuk kejadian atau peristiwa itu sendiri. Adapun sejarah subjektif dipengaruhi oleh emosi dan pikiran sejarawan atau penulis sejarah tentang suatu peristiwa. (Ratna Hapsari & M. Adil, 2016: 7).

Sedangkan menurut Murtadha Muthahhari (2002: 303-307), pengertian sejarah didefinisikan ke dalam tiga cabang yang saling berhubungan erat: (1) sejarah adalah cabang dari pengetahuan tentang peristiwa masa lalu dan kondisi yang berkaitan dengan masyarakat masa lalu.

(2) sejarah adalah cabang pengetahuan tentang aturan dan tradisi yang mengatur kehidupan masyarakat di masa lalu atas dasar tradisi. (3) sejarah digunakan untuk menunjukan filsafat sejarah yaitu pengetahuan tentang perkembangan masyarakat dari tahap ke tahap dan pengetahuan tentang hokum yang mengatur perubahan-perubahan tersebut.
